Louise Groves Still, 97, passed away Saturday, November 18, 2017, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on November 8, 1920 in Summersville, West Virginia, one of nine children, and the last living child of Harrison and Anna Mary Groves, descendants of the settlers of Nicholas County. She attended Concord College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with honors and was Homecoming Queen. She was an administrative assistant in Detroit and Baltimore, where she met Rom Weathers Still of Winston-Salem, North Carolina (deceased 2000). They married in 1945. Louise was a teacher with the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system for over forty years, the majority of which were spent at R.J. Reynolds High School. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honor society for women educators. She touched thousands of lives of students from whom she continued to hear for years after she retired. Louise was a devoted and loving mother, who loved to read and had a wonderful sense of humor. Her Christian faith guided her throughout life. She attended Mass regularly, often daily, at St. Leo Catholic Church in Winston-Salem, and was a long standing member of several Rosary groups in which her prayers no doubt brought aid and comfort to many lives. Louise regularly donated to numerous charitable organizations over the course of her life. Words cannot do justice for such a tender hearted, loving, and prayerful soul. She will be dearly missed.
Louise is survived by four children, Mary Lou Murray (Paul) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Carolyn Lyttle (David), Rom Still (Barbara), and John Still (Sherly), all of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Benjamin Murray (Haley) of Brooklyn, New York, Anna Murray of Detroit, Michigan, and Elizabeth Lyttle of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, all originally from Summersville, West Virginia. We also express our appreciation to Razz, a beloved Golden Retriever/Great Dane, who brought Louise much comfort and companionship. Thank you to her caregivers Norma Antopina, Charlotte Buff, Jean Greer, Debbie Weaver, and Mary Horton. We are forever grateful for the care of our mother by the wonderful people at Kindred Health Care, and for the kindness and compassion of Dr. Josh McKinnon of Forsyth Hospital.
The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, November 21, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at Vogler Funeral Home, Reynolda Road. There will be a funeral Mass on Wednesday, November 22, 11:00 a.m., at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. A burial service will be held at Walker Memorial Park on Saturday, November 25th, 11:00, in Summersville, WV. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Catholic Charities of Winston-Salem, 1612 14th St NE 27105.
