Mabel G. Blythe

Mabel (Godeke) Blythe, 94, of Evansville, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 27, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was born May 22, 1923 to the late William and Margaret (Schaperjohn) Godeke in Elberfeld, Indiana.

She was raised on the family dairy farm and confirmed at Zoar UCC in Elberfeld. She graduated from Millersburg High School in 1941. After high school, she attended and graduated from Lockyear Business College. On September 12, 1953, she married James E. Blythe. In 1956, they became faithful, longtime members of Centenary United Methodist Church in Evansville where she offered her services in many ways and was an active member of the United Methodist Women. She was an executive secretary at Mead Johnson for 12 years, leaving that position when children entered their life together. Mabel was proud to be a stay-at-home mom. When "the boys" were old enough, she accepted the job of her dreams.church secretary at Centenary church from which she retired after 27 years of faithful service. Jim and Mabel were also active in the Y's Men's Club, participating in numerous activities in support of the YMCA and Camp Carson. For many years, they organized volunteer help for the annual YMCA "Pancake Days". She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed baking, cooking, and spending time with her family.

Mabel is survived by sons, Tim Blythe (Cheryl) and Tom Blythe (Donna) all of Darmstadt; grandchildren, Katie Goebel (Neil), Matthew Blythe (fiancée, Jamie Settlemyer), Jessica LaMar (Elliott), Jennifer Mandrell (Cameron) and Melissa Blythe; sisters, Doris Young (William), Dorothy Menke (Lester), Evelyn Rettinger (Herman) and Marian Miller; brothers, Emil Godeke, Ray Godeke (Doris) and Harold Godeke (Joyce); sister-in-law, Bettye Godeke, and brothers-in-law, Edgar Kuhlenschmidt (Audrey) and Wayne Drilling

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, James Blythe; sisters, Mildred Hahn (Edwin), Elsie Foerster (Robert), Wilma Drilling, and Edna Kuhlenschmidt; brother, Carl Godeke; brother-in-law, William Miller, and sister-in-law, Marie Godeke. She was also preceded in death by her in-laws; Elston and Hannalee Blythe, Mildred and Albert Rue, Martha and Wiegand Knerr, and John and Elsie Blythe.

The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Heritage Center and Heritage Hospice for their care.

The Funeral Service will be 10:00AM, Monday, October 2, 2017 at Centenary United Methodist Church, 14340 Old State Road, officiated by Pastor Danny Walker, with burial to follow at Blythe Chapel Cemetery in Owensville. Friends may visit 1:00 to 7:00PM, Sunday, October 1, 2017 at Alexander North Chapel, 4200 Stringtown Road and Monday from 9:00AM to service time at the church.
