Longtime Albion resident, Maggie Lee Womack, passed away peacefully at 8:57 A.M., on Monday, August 27, 2012, at Marshall Nursing and Rehabilitation, in Marshall, Michigan, where she had been a resident for just over a year. Maggie lived a long and fruitful life during rich historical times. She was born at the dawn of the age of flight. On the day of her birth, Wilbur and Orville Wright flew together on one of their planes for the first and only time in their lives. In 2008, she cast a vote for Barak Obama; the first African-American to be elected President of the United States.

She was best known in Albion as the lady who baked great cakes and pies. Her recipes for cherry and apple pie were published in a 1950's edition of the Duncan Hines Cookbook under the title Parker Inn, Albion, Michigan; an establishment at which she was the "Head Cook" for several years. Shortly thereafter, she and her husband, Henry opened "Maggie's Restaurant", a family-owned business located on Austin Avenue in Albion, Michigan. She worked there as Proprietor and Head Cook until her retirement. When visiting her home, she showed her love and affection to many with a big smile and a hug followed by the questions; "Have you eaten anything?", or "Do you want something to eat?"

Maggie was born on May 25, 1910, in Wilcox County, Alabama, as the oldest of four children born to Jay and Rythie Luckie. She and Henry Womack were married September 28, 1935, in Greenville, Alabama. Together they had five children.
At her age forty-four, the family moved to Albion on July 7, 1954. She lived most of her life in Albion at 503 W. Cass Street. During the fifty years she lived there, she was active in church; First in Macedonia Baptist Church and for a greater period at Grace Temple Church of God in Christ. While at Grace Temple, she served on the Hospitality Committee and was "Mother Womack" to many people in and outside the church.

Maggie Lee Womack passed away at 102 years of age. She was preceded in death by her Husband of Sixty-three years, Henry Womack (March 5, 1999), her Daughter Annie Laura (Womack) Estwick, (January 27, 2001) and her Son Curtis Womack.(May 15, 2005) and Daughter-in-law Ruby Nell Womack (May 24, 2011). She is survived by three sons: Henry Womack, Jr. (Christina), Albion; Jesse Womack (Beverley) Sherman Oaks, California, and J.C. Womack, Moreno Valley, California. She has one remaining sibling, a brother, Lewis Luckie, Century, Florida and Daughter-in-law Shirley Womack, Allen, TX. She has seventeen Grandchildren, fourteen Great Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and their children.
There are also many people unrelated by blood to whom she became "Grandma Womack" because if they passed through her home needing either food, guidance or love, they got it. She was loved by many and we will all miss her physical presence; but her Spirit will live with us forever. She will always be a truly Inspiring and Charitable Spirit.

Visitation for family and friends will be Friday, August 31, 2012 from 12:00P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the J. Kevin Tidd Funeral Home, 811 Finley Drive, Albion, Michigan 49224 with Family Hour from 6:00-8:00P.M.
Funeral Service will be held Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 11:00 A.M. at the Grace Temple Church of God in Christ, 711 Grace Street, Albion, Michigan 49224 with Pastor Steve Williams officiating. Burial will be at Albion Memory Gardens, Albion.
