Mamie Davis Crawford passed away on Monday, December 14, 2015 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse H. Crawford Sr.; daughter, Muriel Crawford Jones; her mother, Mabel Henry; father and step mother, Robert and Bessie Davis; brother, Mose Davis; grandson Brandon Crawford.
She is survived by her children, Jesse Crawford Jr., Jonathan Crawford Sr., Elizabeth (Ronald) Watts, Marty (Blakely) Barton, Marian Reff, Gladys (Jerry) Portis, Julius (Corlleen) Crawford, Frank Crawford, Philisia Crawford, Phillip Crawford, Rhonda (John) Polanco, and Thomas (Jennifer) Crawford; brother, John (Pearl) Davis; sister, Irma Moore, brothers, Sherman McFadden and Milton (Barbara) Wicks; sister-in-law, Inez Treinier; son-in-law, James Jones Sr.; stepson, Charles J. (Hannalore) Crawford; 25 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 1 great, great-grandchild.
She graduated from Dunbar High School 1944 and was one of the premier vocalists in her class. She was gifted in singing especially opera. She became one of Jehovah's Witnesses on September 20, 1941. Upon becoming one of Jehovah's Witnesses, she spent countless hours in the black community of Prichard and Mobile, along with her partner, Helen Nichols, talking to any who would listen about the Bible and the hope that God has in store for humankind. Mamie was a longtime resident of the Whistler Community. She was known as one of the "neighborhood mothers" providing comfort to all who experienced tragedy, motherly guidance and advice to those in need, and a meal to all who were in need.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, December 19th at 1:00 p.m. Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses 4232 St. Stephens Rd. Mobile, Al. 36612. Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street on Friday, December 18th, from 5-8 p.m.
