February 13th, 2017 , Marita Knutson Rand of Lyme, CT passed away after losing her battle with cancer.
Born 8-19-35 to Carl Knutson ( of Kathryn , ND) and Doris (Bliven) Knutson ( Salem, CT) both of Old Lyme, CT.
She grew up on Knutson Rd in Old Lyme CT and attended schools in both California and Old Lyme, CT.
As a teen she was crowned May queen
She graduated from Old Lyme High as valedictorian of her class.
She married Allen Rand of Lyme on June 30, 1953 and happily celebrated their 63 anniversary together.
They made their first home in Covina, Calif. but returned to Lyme , CT where they built their home and lived since 1956.
Marita was very active in the community:
A Member of the American Legion Auxilliary for over 50 years
A Member of the 1st Congregational Church of Lyme where she spent 20 years teaching Sunday school and helping out when it was time for the rummage sale.
Girl Scout Leader of Lyme for four years during which time she planned and supervised a trip to NYC for the Troop.
A Member of the Lyme grange #147 spending 36 years as secretary, and participating as a committee chairman of the
Lyme Grange Hamburg Fair.
She was first employed as a waitress at Barbizon Oaks in the 50's now known as the Old Lyme Inn.
She then went to work for James pharmacy which became Old Lyme Pharmacy. Her first job there was manager of the soda fountain/ luncheonette. After the remodel of the pharmacy and removal of the soda fountain she became manager of the pharmacy gift shop for 35 years until she retired.
After Marita retired, she partnered with her daughters to open the Lymes General Store a unique gift shop.
She also worked for a year as a tax preparer for HRBlock
Marita and family traveled the USA extensively during summers through out the years.
In 2006 she was able to fulfill a desire to visit Norway,homeland of her grandfather, with her daughter Andrina.
Upon retirement she and her husband spent winters at Siesta Village in Weslaco ,TX. where they made many friends, and spent time with family members that also traveled there.
Throughout her life, she was an organizer, whether family picnics,or other family gatherings. They were always special. Nieces, nephews and neighborhood children were always welcome anytime.

On Marita's 80th birthday family and friends gathered at the Hideaway restaurant in Old Lyme to celebrate. At that time she was presented with a book of her life which included photo memories of her life thru the years.
Marita leaves behind her Husband :Allen Rand ( Lyme, CT), Two daughters both of Lyme , CT : Andrina Monte (spouse Charles H Monte), and Terry Bischoff (spouse Thomas Bischoff)
Three grandsons:Charles Andrew Monte (spouse Carmela (Presti) Monte) of Lyme, Brian Allen Monte (significant other Angela Newton) of Minneapolis MN, and Travis Bischoff of Montville, CT
Twin great grandsons: Caden and Calvin Monte ( sons of Charles Andrew and Carmela Monte)
A brother Peter Knutson (wife Phyllis Knutson ( Griswold,CT) and sister Rae Purinton (Old Lyme, Ct)
