Martha D. Cherry Smith, 96, Colorado City went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the Mitchell County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Colorado City.
She was born on March 26, 1921, in Cherry, Red River, Texas to Ralph and Maude Pendergrass Cherry.
At the age of 2 Martha's family moved to the Colorado City area where she spent the majority of her life, she was a graduate of Colorado High. Shortly after graduating high school on June 15, 1940 she married the love of her life Julius Oscar Smith who preceded her in death. Martha was a woman who put God and family above all. She was a member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Colorado City, where she served her church doing numerous tasks until she was no longer able to do so. In April of 1961 she started her career path for Mitchell County serving for one year as a deputy in the tax assessor's office, then moving on as assistant county auditor before being appointed by Judge Weldon Kirk to the position of County Auditor in November 1981, which was her job title until she retired. Aside from spending time with her family she enjoyed baking, knitting, and sewing.
Martha is survived by her son Stephen Smith and his wife Carolyn Weibel Smith of Colorado City, her grandson Stephen Smith Jr. and his wife Tonya Bolton Smith of Centreville, MS, and by her granddaughter Aimee Smith Detamore and husband Rex Detamore of Stamford, Tx. Also surviving are her great grandchildren Abigail and Wesley Smith of Centreville, MS and Reagan and Macy Detamore of Stamford, as well as nephew William Ezell. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents Ralph and Maude Cherry, by her husband Julius Smith, by a son Robert Smith, by her sister Nona Ezell and her husband Grady Ezell, and by nieces Frances Wood Duckworth and Jo Salmon.
A funeral for Martha will be held on Thursday, January 18th at 1 pm at Kiker Seale Funeral Home with Rev. Dana Mayfield of the Colorado City 1st Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Colorado City Cemetery. The family will be present for a visitation from 11 am until the time of the service on Thursday.
