A private family graveside service for Martha Johnson, 85, will be held Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Henry Cemetery with Bro. Warren Jones officiating. Family will receive friends at McPeters Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. until service time at 4:00 p.m.

Mrs. Johnson died on April 11, 2017 at Southern Magnolia Assisted Living in Iuka. She was born in Corinth on June 15, 1931 to the late U.G. and Hazel Thrasher. She was a graduate of Corinth High School and got her degree in Education from the Mississippi State University for Women in Columbus. She was a member of Waldron St. Christian Church. She was a retired school teacher with the Corinth School District and after retirement she worked part time as a dispatcher for the Corinth Police Department. She was known for her talents while acting for the Corinth Theater Arts. In 1973 she debuted in "Never Too Late" and received rave reviews for her performance. In 1980 she also played the role of Janet Fisher in "The Last of the Red Hot Lovers" for which she won the Magnolia "Maggie Award" for best actress. She also had roles in plays "Can't Take It With You", "Butterflies Are Free" and "Picnic". She did standup comedy for local nursing homes and private parties. She enjoyed playing Bridge and Bridge tournaments with her friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Johnson.

Mrs. Johnson is survived by her children, George Johnson of Newnan, GA, Jimmy Johnson of Corinth; Susan Ross and husband Paul of Rienzi, Alice McIntire and husband Victor of Corinth; step-son, Hugh Blackman and his wife Patty of Columbus, OH; grandchildren, Jim Ross and wife Amber, Molly Thornton and husband Eric, and Trace Johnson; great-grandchild, Harlie Ross; Aunt, Louise Smith of Adamsville and a host of other family and friends.
