Obituary for Mary Cecelia Surbrook

August 15, 1938 - July 6, 2021
Franklin, Tennessee | Age 82

Mary Cecelia "Ceil" Scott Surbrook, 82, of Franklin, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on July 6th, 2021 in Franklin.

Ceil was born in Detroit, Michigan to Paul and Lillian Scott on August 15, 1938. She was their second daughter and had three younger brothers. The family lived in Detroit and Pittsburgh. Cecelia "Scotty" Scott dated Jim Hasper but eventually married William Surbrook and had two children. The family moved to Newtown, Pennsylvania in 1980. After Bill's death and the death of Jim's wife, Janet, Jim and Ceil reconnected and were married in 2000 - 40 years after they dated. They eventually moved to Franklin, Tennessee and built their dream home with lots of room so all their family and friends could come to visit.

Ceil was a very talented artist her whole life and took great joy in sharing the creative process with young people. She participated in many local art shows and won multiple awards for her collages and watercolors.

She also loved a good party, and spent lots of time in Atlantic City, on Cruises, and traveling the world. All while wearing sequins and feathers and making friends with strangers everywhere she went. She was the person in the room that everyone wanted to be close to.

Ceil had some rough times in her life and all she really wanted was to be loved – and in that, she was wildly successful.

Ceil is preceded in death by parents, Paul and Lillian Scott; brothers, Tom Scott and John Scott; husband, William Surbrook; best friends, Claire Anderson and Linda Hassell; loving pets, Frosty, Casey, Puppy, Kitty, Teddy, Baxter, and Roscoe.

Ceil is survived by: husband, Jim Hasper; children Lisa Surbrook (Scott Bowers) and Scott Surbrook (Alicia Cook), step-children Deborah Eater (David Eater), Joseph Hasper (Joni Hasper), Cyndy Grabke (Ron Grabke), Lynda Hasper, Margaret Romero (Craig Romero), and Carol Whiteside (Dave Whiteside); sister Bette Boone (Bud Boone), brother James Scott (Linda Scott); grandchildren Kyle Bowers, Elisabeth Bowers, Shannon Surbrook-Bowers, Dylan Surbrook-Bowers, Christina Eater, Matthew Eater, Andrew Eater, Ron Grabke, Janessa Hasper, Stephanie Hasper, Taylor Romero (Kyle Ferrar), and Rhys Romero; great-grandchild Rowan, and many family and friends who loved and cherished her.
