Mary "Dollene" Shumate, age 70, of Pahrump, NV passed away peacefully at the Nathan Adelson Hospice on Thursday, October 12, 2017 near the arms of her loving husband after an eight-year battle with cancer. She was born on November 3, 1946 to Eva and James Lester Massengale in Richmond, CA. Mary grew up in Fresno, California and graduated in 1963 from West Coast Bible College in Fresno. She worked for Bob's Big Boy as a car hop before moving to Los Angeles California to pursue a career in law enforcement as a dispatcher for the LAPD.

Many years later in the early 1980's, Mary advanced her career to the Orange County Probation Department excepting a position as a Probation Officer at the Joplin Boys Ranch. Soon after her hiring the facility changed to focus on substance abuse and gang suppression. Mary was a natural in this setting, as she helped devise programs to deal with these problems that were having a serious impact on the youth of Orange County. Mary was a definite asset in the program development. It was in the Joplin Boys Program that Mary met the love of her life, William "Bill" Shumate. In 1985 Mary and Bill married in a beautiful outdoor ceremony on the bluffs of Dana Point in Dana Point, California.

Mary was selected to be a field probation officer where she was chosen to be an officer in the drug/gang suppression unit, named as the "POSSE" (Probation Offender Search and Seizure Enforcement) unit. Mary was promoted to supervisor and distinguished herself in that role. During that time Mary started law school and became a member of the bar and she left probation to practice law. During her years of practicing law, she was honored as the "Prosecutor of the Year" in 1999 as she went on to win many tough cases, some going all the way to the Supreme Court. In the field of law many of her colleagues and associates nick-named her "The Bulldog." Mary was very dedicated to her work and clients as she won most of her case in and out of court. Mary lived a wonderful life along with her difficulties just as all of us. Mary "Dollene" Shumate will always be remembered and talked about by her many friends, colleagues, associates, and family.

She is survived by her husband William "Bill" Shumate, son Mark Noonkester, daughter in law Kim Noonkester, daughter Natalie Steffen and son in law Gerald Steffen, granddaughters Elizabeth Noonkester, Skylar Steffen and Haven Steffen and grandsons Mark "Jr" Noonkester and Landon Steffen.
