Mary Drennan Schaaf passed away on November 13, 2017 at Spotsylvania Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Mary was born on May 29, 1928 in Washington, DC to Joseph Drennan and Margaret McAteer Drennan.
Mary grew up in Washington DC, attending and Blessed Sacrament and Sacred Heart High Schools in Washington graduating in 1946. She worked for several years in her Father's dental practice. She married Robert Warren Schaaf on August 19, 1955 in Washington DC. They spent 43 wonderful years together.
Mary was a devote Catholic here entire life, and was a Member of a number of parishes in Northern Virginia over the years including Queen of Apostles in Alexandria, St. Bernadette's in Springfield, Nativity in Burke, and St. Jude in Fredericksburg. She has maintained many lifelong friendships to her last days.
Mary will be forever known for her thoughtfulness and her love of cats. What we will miss most is her near photographic memory and ability to tell detailed stories from every era of her life and about all of us, right up to the day she died.
Mary was preceded in death by her Husband Robert (Bob) Schaaf and infant Son Phillip Schaaf. She is also preceded in death by her parents and her only and beloved Sister Margaret (Peggy) Drennan Platt of Kirkwood, MO, who died on the same day three years before Mary; and her Brother in Law Joseph Platt who passed in 2016.
Mary is survived by her only Son Thomas Schaaf and his Wife Laurie Schaaf of Richmond, VA. She adored her three Grandsons Dustin Schaaf of Fairfax City, VA, Brian Schaaf of Atlanta, GA, and Henry Schaaf, currently a Sophomore at Hampden-Sydney College in Farmville, VA. She is also survived by Dustin's Wife Victoria Schaaf and her Great Grand Daughter Aurora Schaaf. She also maintains close contact with all of her four nieces and nephews, Joseph Platt (Jane Blinzler) of Cincinnati, OH, Steven Platt (Brittany) of Glen Carbon, IL, Margaret Platt Boes (Daniel) of Dardenne Prairie, MO and Catherine Platt of Kirkwood, MO.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church, 10725 Courthouse Rd, Fredericksburg, VA 22407 at 10:30AM on November 29, 2017. A reception will be held afterwards at St. Jude Church. Mary will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with her Husband Bob, a WWII veteran. The date of burial is not known at this time, but will be in approximately 4 months. A reception in Arlington will be scheduled to coincide with the burial.
