Mary E. Powell, 62, of Killingworth, formerly of Branford, passed away peacefully on Tuesday November 14, 2017 at CT Hospice in Branford after a heroic battle with cancer.
Born in New Haven on September 25, 1955, she was the daughter of Elizabeth Rayner of Killingworth and the late Harry R. Darling Sr.
Mary was a graduate of Daniel Hand H.S. Class of '73 and earned her Bachelor's Degree later in life. She was a longtime employee of Unilever/Chesebrough Ponds of Clinton and more recent, Sound Manufacturing of Old Saybrook, where they took great care of her needs during her illness and treated her like family. Mary was a creative and artistic individual. She loved painting and drawing. Mary was an avid gardener and spent her summers going to the beach and fishing. During winters months she was a homebody and enjoyed crocheting. Most of all she cherished time with family, especially her granddaughters. Mary was a kind, loving and fiercely independent woman, who will be greatly missed.
Besides her mother Elizabeth, she is survived by her son Kevin Powell and his significant other Jess Funaro of Guilford; two granddaughters, Sarah and Jayda Powell; three brothers, Harry Darling Jr (Barbara) of Clinton, Gary Darling (Lorraine) of West Topsham, VT and Larry Darling of Colchester; two step-sisters, Cynthia Darling of FL and Carolyn Turner of SC and many nieces and nephews. Also survived by her former spouse Jim Powell and his children Barbara and Jay Powell of S.C.
Friends may call on Sunday November 19th from 2-5 p.m. at the Swan Funeral Home 80 East Main St. Clinton, followed by a Memorial Service at 5:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be private.
