Mary Etta Kern, 86, of Waynesboro went home to be with her Lord on Friday, October 20, 2017 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Born October 10, 1931 in Covington, she was the daughter of the late Russell Thomas and Frances (Nichols) Fortune.

Mary was a member of Bridge Christian Church, Fishersville. Prior to retirement, she was employed by Oaklawn Mausoleum & Memory Gardens where she worked as an Office Manager. Mary was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Waynesboro Chapter No. 105. Her greatest joy in life was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing cards with her neighborhood friends, crocheting, reading, attending her grandchildren's baseball games and watching NASCAR races. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend to many.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herman E. "Heck" Kern; sister, Alene Baker; and great-grandson, Noah Kern.

Survivors include her son, Russell Kern and wife, Sharon; two daughters, Linda Fitzgerald and husband, Erik and Lisa Beiler and husband, Omar; grandchildren, Travis Fitzgerald, Ryan Shuler and wife, Melissa, Jaime Lucchetti and husband, Andrew, Amy Cash and husband, Chris, Ashley Kern and Jessica Kern; great-grandchildren, Blake Roach, Landon Roach, Brogan Fitzgerald, McKinley Fitzgerald, Jack Crawford, Jaden Kern, Luke Shuler, Isla Lucchetti and Liviana Lucchetti.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 24, 2017 at Augusta Memorial Park with Pastor Todd Brown officiating. Those who plan to attend are asked to meet directly at the cemetery. Following the service, all are invited back to her residence for a time of fellowship.

There will be no formal viewing or visitation at the funeral home.
