Mary Frances Jones March 21, 1935 - December 31, 2017
Mary Frances Jones, of Killeen, passed away December 31, 2017 following a long illness with dementia. Mary was born in Clifton, Texas, on March 21, 1935, to Luther and Clara Williams. Mary, married Walter Clifford Jones Jr., on September 13, 1952 in Bellview, Florida.
Mary and Walter had five children. As a wife to a career service man, Mary toted her children all over the country and the world. Throughout her travels she picked up new "family" making lifelong friends with other service families. No matter how far Mary travelled, she always remained close to her parents and her siblings.
In 1968, Walter retired from the Army, and they settled in Killeen.
Although Mary had never been politically active, in 1988 she helped form a political action committee, Concerned Citizens for Sensible Spending. Mary decided she could and would do more, and she stepped way outside of her comfort zone and ran for a seat on the Killeen City Council, and against some very long odds, won.
Mary always knew and loved the Lord. Mary was a charter member of Pershing Park Baptist Church in Killeen and a longtime member of Community Baptist Church, in Killeen, where she remained a member until her death.
Mary was an amazing mother, showing each of her children love in everything she did. She supported their many endeavors, even the ones that involved dragging home every manner of stray animal. She never missed a football game, a school play, or a band concert. Even though in the end she didn't recognize her children by name she knew them and told everyone she met, she had "great kids".
Mary was an amazing cook and her table always had extra, for the many people who would stop by her home. She was famous for her famous fried pies. Many called her "mom", and once her first grandchild was born, she became "Memaw" to most everyone.
Although dementia robbed Mary of her memory and her independence, it could not rob her of her funny, sweet, caring, and loving personality. To know Mary was to love her, and that never changed.
Mary is preceded in death by her mother and father, her husband, and her brothers James, Frankey, and Darwin "Dob" Williams and her sister Thera Stansberry Smith.
Mary is survived by her children Sharon (Carl) Krieger, Shirley "Renay" Jones, Mike (Lynette) Jones, Walter Clifford III "Bo" (Kathy) Jones, and Pam (Bob) Colon; her grandchildren Christi Jarrett, Trey (Erin) Mangan, Sharon Marie and Libby Colon, and great-grandchildren Alyssa and Paige Ponath, Ashton Jarrett; Annaliesa, Clara, Liana, and John Mangan.
Mary had an amazing green thumb. She will be remembered for her African violets in her kitchen window. Mary loved flowers, but if you prefer a more lasting memorial, consider a gift to the cemetery where she will be buried: Smith-Bend Coon Creek Cemetery, PO Box 5507, Laguna Park, TX 76644.
