DEER CREEK ~ Mary Jo S. Carney-Nelson, 65, of Deer Creek, passed away at 3:20 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2018 at her son’s home in Peoria surrounded by her family.

She was born January 18, 1953 in Spring Valley, she was the daughter of Dr. Roy and Elaine (Johnson) Vandenberg.  Her parents preceded her in death along with one son, Ray, at birth.

A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by two sons, Jamie Carney of Stoughton, Wisconsin and John (Kim) Nelson of Peoria; one daughter, Beth Nelson of Deer Creek; six grandchildren, Brittany Carney, Jared Carney, Maci Carney, Jameson Carney, Makayla Brown and Rosie Nelson; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Steve (Terri) Vandenberg of Lutz, Florida and one sister, Lisa Klein of Bloomington.

Mary worked for Caterpillar, Inc. as a manufacturing engineer and retired with over 40 years of service.

She loved her work and also loved being outside gardening.  Working and genealogy and time spent with family were important to her.  Mary also liked travel, especially taking family vacations.

A celebration of life gathering will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 6, 2018 at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Morton.  As a final act of kindness, Mary donated her body to medical science.  Preston-Hanley Funeral Homes & Crematory in Pekin is assisting the family with arrangements.
