Gannon-Mary Rita (nee Hayes), 75, passed away peacefully at her home on January 2. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 46 years, Thomas, her brother Thomas, and her sister Elizabeth. Born in Yonkers January 14, 1942, her family moved to River Edge in 1949 where she was in the first graduating class of St. Peter's elementary school. She excelled at the Academy of the Holy Angels and at the age of 17 enrolled at St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing, starting a nursing career that lasted 50 years. She earned her BSN from St. Peter's University in 1989 graduating summa cum laude. She met her husband, then a New York City police officer, at a St. Patrick's Day party and married in 1965. They soon welcomed four boys: Thomas, Brian, John, and Michael, and in 1973 the family moved from NYC to River Edge. Mary Rita was renowned for the love and care she provided to all around her, both in her personal life and as Director of Nursing at the Bergen County Health Care Center which she ran for 20 years. She was a tireless volunteer in her community, serving on the River Edge Board of Health, River Dell football boosters, and various initiatives at St. Peter's church. As a never ending source of love, she touched the lives of thousands of people with her selfless caring and brilliant mind. She loved to be with her husband at their cabin in the Adirondacks, and earned the name Speed Queen from her youth as a rally car driver and for the pace at which she drove to Speculator. Mary Rita is survived by her brother Richard Hayes and his wife Doris, her sister Ellen Grooms and her husband James, her sister in law Eleanor Hayes, her four sons, her daughters-in-law Shannon, Kristen, Jennifer and Becky, and her cherished grandchildren Caroline, Johnny, Ryan, Brian, Declan, Jack, Liam, and Milo. Wake will be held Sunday January 7th from 2pm-7pm at Basralian Funeral Home 559 Kinderkamack Road, Oradell, NJ Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, January 8, 10:45am at St. Peter the Apostle Church River Edge.
