Mary S. Morris of Crozet, Virginia passed away at home on December 31st, 2017 surrounded by her adoring family. She was 75 years old. Mary was born on May 20th, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. She was raised in Brown’s Cove Virginia by Moses and Lilly Coleman who preceded her in death. She was also predeceased by three siblings including her very special brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Carole Shifflett of Fairfax, Virginia.

Mary leaves behind her devoted husband of 57 years, Eldon Alexander “Sonny” Morris who provided constant loving care for her during her illness for the past three years. She also leaves behind her daughter Sue Houchens and husband, Ben, of Crozet, her son Richard Eldon Morris and wife, Jeanne, of Spring Hill, Florida, her “adopted” son Jeff Rosson of Charlottesville, her beloved grandchildren, Richard Edward Morris of Lancaster, United Kingdom and wife Meghan, Heather Brooke Franklin and husband James of Crozet, Samantha Susanne Houchens and Kori Electra Morris both of Charlottesville, her great grandchildren Boston Morris, Lilliana Morris, and Brooklyn Franklin. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews including her beloved nephew Ernest Shifflett of Hiroshima, Japan who traveled around the world to visit her.

Mary attended Albemarle High School. She was employed by Acme Visible Records in Crozet, Virginia for 17 years. She left Acme to open a family business, Morris’ Grocery, with Sonny that they owned for 23 years together. She was also a member of Brown’s Cove United Methodist Church for 73 years. Mary loved animals; she had many beloved pets during her life that she cherished. In addition, she enjoyed playing bingo, reading, traveling, and gardening (especially growing tomatoes) until her health declined. She was an avid University of Virginia sports fan; she and Sonny had UVa season tickets for football and basketball for over 30 years. She was happiest when surrounded by her family (especially her children and grandchildren - who were her pride and joy). Her grandchildren considered her the “very best Nanny ever.” She and Sonny could always be found at one of their children or grandchildren’s activities. However, she laughingly admitted that her greatest accomplishment in life was “keeping Sonny straight for 57 years”; they were inseparable, wherever Sonny was, Mary was by his side.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hospice of the Piedmont for their support and exceptional care of Mary. Many thanks also to doctors Mark Kealy, Dan Sawyer, and Amie Munson and special nurse Marquette Garrison for the medical care they provided to Mary throughout the years. Sonny would also like to acknowledge the around the clock tender loving care provided to their beloved “Nanny” by granddaughters Samantha and Heather in her final days.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 5th, 2018 at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Funeral services will be held at 11:30am on Saturday, January 6th, 2018 at Brown’s Cove United Methodist Church located at 5147 Brown’s Gap Turnpike, Crozet, Virginia 22932 with Pastor Ben Houchens officiating. Burial will follow at the Mount Moriah United Methodist Church at 4524 Garth Road, Charlottesville, Virginia, 22901.
