Waterford—Mary Sylvestre, 68, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Sunday, February 5, 2012. She was born on June 27, 1943 in Providence, Rhode Island, the daughter of the late Joseph and Grace (Ferrara) Cesario. She married Donat H. Sylvestre on October 6, 1968 in Warwick, Rhode Island. They have been married for 43 years. In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, three sons, and their spouses. Mary Turley and her husband William Turley Jr. of Hebron CT; Roger Sylvestre of Norwich, CT; John and fiance' Cheryl Gaudenzi of Waterford, CT; Paul Sylvestre and his wife Monica Roscelli of Campbell, CA. She is also survived by 8 grandchildren; Stefanie, Jessica, Amanda, Eric, Justin, Megan, Alisha, and Cameron. Two brothers, James Cesario and wife Joan; Jerry Cesario and wife Beverly, both of Warwick, Rhode Island, and many nieces and nephews. She will be sadly missed by her beloved husband, children and loyal friends. She will be remembered for her compassion and ability to help others. Her happiest times were with her husband, children, and grandchildren. In her earlier years of marriage she enjoyed skiing, reading, and playing the piano. She graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a major in Math and Education in 1965; Wesleyan University with a MALS in Math in 1972, and a sixth year certificate in administration from Southern CT State College in 1982. Her first teaching position was at Fitch High School. She also taught at Rippowan High School in Stamford, CT, East Lyme, and part-time at Mohegan Community College, Thames Valley, University of CT at Avery Point, and the University of New Haven for Electric Boat. When she returned to full-time teaching her position as a Math teacher was at Grasso Technical High School from 1978 to 1980. From 1980 to 2004 Mary taught at Ledyard High School until her illness forced her to retire in June 2004. She also served as Math Dept. Head for the last 18 years of her teaching career. During her career at Ledyard, Mary was an instructor for the University of Connecticut Cooperative Program teaching college level courses to high school students as well as being eligible to take the AP Calculus test for college credit. Funeral Arrangements are being handled by the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, CT. Calling Hours will be held on Wednesday, February 7th. from 4 to 7 PM. The funeral procession will assemble Thursday morning at 10 A.M. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church, 17 Squire St., New London, at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private. Mary, Donat, and their family wish to thank Venus George and the caregivers of Bayview Healthcare West Wing for their love, care, and support. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made in Mary's name to American Parkinson Disease Association Inc., CT Chapter (APDA), 27 Allendale Drive, North Haven, CT 06473.
