Marye Theresa McCarthy

Monterey - Marye passed away in the comfort of her home on January 18, 2017. She was fearless, courageous, optimistic, determined and strong. Her Catholic faith was a constant companion, unshakable & true - a touchstone of strength. Her faith provided solace during challenging times, while equally acknowledged during her joyful moments. She was born in Northern Ireland, the eldest of 6 children. Always independent, she moved on her own at age 18 to England, living in the heart of London during World War II. There she met her cherished friend Rosemarie. They maintained a friendship through beautifully handwritten letters for over 70 years. In 1956, my Mom set sail aboard the Queen Mary for America. As she was unaccompanied, the Ship Steward seated her for dinner at a group table which included a handsome young man returning from his military service in Europe. This serendipitous encounter was the beginning of an inseparable, dedicated & loving union. The romance of Frank & Marye continued for over 53 years, until his death in 2009. My parents settled in Canada where my Mom was a grade school teacher. Her passion was teaching but she also delighted in travelling the world with my Dad. In 1998, they moved to be close to our family in Monterey. Never idle, my Mom served as a volunteer at Community Hospital for many years. She rarely missed a day of Mass, cherishing her wonderful friends & her relationship with God. Marye was preceded in death by her son Kevin in 2002 & grandson Sean in 2010. She is survived by her daughter Maureen, son-in-law Sam & granddaughter Rachel, her brothers Bernard & Jim of Ireland and her many nieces, nephews & cousins. Our special thanks to my Mom's dear friends Alice Koleszar, Ave Rodriquez, Catherine Yost, Fran Jones, Father Patrick Dooling of San Carlos Cathedral & the remarkable staff of the Hospice of the Central Coast. Her daughter Maureen adds: "These past few weeks have been a gift. The quiet time spent with my Mom & seeing the many hands & hearts that helped care for her with such overwhelming compassion, respect, dignity & love. My Mom continued to teach me until the very end, leaving an indelible mark on my heart. We will miss her dearly'. A memorial mass to celebrate Marye will be held in the Ave Maria chapel located at 1249 Josselyn Canyon Road in Monterey at 10:00am on January 29th, followed by brunch.
