Maynard A. Nagelhout died December 21st, 2017 following a prolonged illness. Surrounded by family, he passed peacefully at his home in Alexandria, Virginia. Maynard was born to William and Helen Nagelhout in South Dakota. He was raised on his family's Hamlin County farm near Bemis, South Dakota with his younger brother, Donald. For his early education, Maynard attended a rural country school and then graduated from Castlewood High School. In high school, he excelled in track, baseball, and football, but was regarded primarily as an excellent basketball player. After graduating in 1956, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life, Sharon D. Miller in 1957. He attended South Dakota State College where he majored in Electrical Engineering; he was also involved in Army ROTC. Upon graduation, Maynard immediately joined the army and began a long and successful military career. He trained as a helicopter pilot and served overseas in Germany and Vietnam. Between his three Vietnam deployments, he was a flight instructor at Fort Rucker, Alabama. During his career he was awarded the Bronze Star (2nd Oak Leaf Cluster), as well as numerous other citations, including Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, and Army Commendation Medal. He was a research and development coordinator for 12 years. He received the Army's R & D Team Achievement Award for development of laser technology. He took the laser target designator system to the 1st Air Calvary Division for implementation in Viet Nam. After service in Viet Nam, He attended the USAF Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama. Maynard achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and finished his career at the Pentagon and retired in 1983 after 22 years in the Army.

After his military career, Maynard started, and served as CEO of, Applied Resources Inc. Rosslyn VA, a defense contracting company. He had offices in Alexandria VA, Huntsville AL, and Orlando FL. He retired at age 75.

Maynard was passionate about spending time with his family and always enjoyed his family vacations at the beach. He also enjoyed catching Rockfish on the Chesapeake Bay aboard his pride and joy, Grady White "Marlin." He loved spending time in the Solomons MD, with his children and grandchildren.

Maynard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sharon; His son, David and his wife Sela (Harrisburg, SD); his daughter, Debra Newhall and her husband Ben (Olney, Maryland); and his daughter, DiAnn Park and husband Bob (Vienna, Virginia); nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Helen (Bleeker) Nagelhout, and Brother, Donald.

The visitation will be held on Friday, December 29, 2017 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Demaine Funeral Home, Old Town Alexandria. Burial will be at the Arlington National Cemetery. Date will be determined. In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation at
