Melda Marie Perdue Wilburn was born January 24, 1922 in Yukon, McDowell County, WV and died January 26, 2018 in Cary, NC at 96 years of age. Melda, the daughter of Thomas Homer Perdue and Bessie Ellen Christian Perdue, was raised in Stepptown, WV where she was a member of the Kermit High School class of 1940 (Kermit, WV). Following High School, Melda held a number jobs in various cities in southwestern Virginia and Ohio. While a cleric at the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station in Alexandria, VA during WWII, she met Charles L. Wilburn III whom she married in Parkland, Maryland on June 5th, 1945. When their daughters were in their late teens, Melda taught at the Marjorie Daw School in Alexandria, VA for ten years. She loved working with the preschool aged children and being able to provide them with a good foundation for their further education.

In addition to her parents and husband of 43 years, Melda was predeceased by 4 brothers (Hursel, Kenneth, Lundy and Ray Perdue) and 2 sisters (O. Zuma Perdue and Zennia P. Williamson), and son-in-law John Spencer "Jock" Davis, Jr.

She is survived by daughters Marsha D. W. Ward (M. Fran), Cary, NC and Denise G. W. Davis, Alexandria, VA, a grandson Mathew D. Ward (Carrie), Las Vegas, NV, as well as, a number of beloved nieces and nephews and special family friends Maria Monzon and her family.

The family would like to thank the staff at Morningside of Raleigh and Cary Health and Rehabilitation Center for the care and kindness they showed to Melda during her residence there.

Visitation (1-2 pm) and Service (at 2 pm) will be held on Saturday February 3rd, 2018 at Demaine Funeral Home, 520 S. Washington St, Alexandria, VA 22314. Following burial at Mt. Comfort Cemetery there will be a reception.
