Melvin Eugene Bacon was born in Portland, Oregon to parents Frank and Anne (Abbott) Bacon on February 24th, 1932. Mel was the oldest of three siblings; he was brother to Alice and Shirley. Mel was raised in the Corbett area of Oregon. His mother taught him how to fish and hunt. Mel played baseball and basketball in high school. He graduated from Corbett High School.

Following high school, Mel enlisted in the US Navy and went on to serve in combat zones as a radarman during both the Korean War and Vietnam. Mel notably served on the both the USS Iowa and the USS Columbus. He retired from the US Navy after 21 years of service. After his time in the Navy, Mel began a career with the US Postal Service where he worked for 20 years as a letter carrier. After his retirement from the post office, Mel worked for many years as an usher at Portland's Rose Garden and Keller Auditorium.

Mel was a loving father, provider, caregiver, and friend to his children Eugene, Amber, Michael, Mark, and step-children Denise and Renay. He was a loving, caring, and devoted husband to his wife Rita. Mel was an involved, devoted member of Tigard Christian Church. He was very firm in his faith. It has been said that Mel was a "true family man". It has also been said that Mel was "someone who would make you feel good about yourself". He was humorous, a bit of a jokester, and could be a little flirtatious.

Mel was a tremendous fisherman and enjoyed trout and salmon fishing with his family. He was quite competitive with his fishing - the one rule when fishing with Mel was that Mel always catches the first fish. When fishing with Mel, if he did not catch the first fish, you were in big trouble!

Mel had many interests, hobbies, and pastimes. He loved his baseball - he was a Yankees and Giants fan. He enjoyed gardening. He was an American Legion and VFW Volunteer, and he was involved in Portland Senior Theatre.

Mel is predeceased by his parents Frank and Anne Bacon; his sister Shirley Aumann; and his previous wife of 26 years, Ruth King.

Mel is survived by his loving wife Rita; sister, Alice Ellis; sons Eugene, Michael, and Mark Bacon; daughter Amber Hoagland; step-daughters Denise Jensen, and Renay Radley; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many extended family and good friends.
