Melvin Mitchell was born March 9, 1931 to the late Benjamin and Daisy Small Mitchell in Charleston, South Carolina. He was the eighth child of twelve children born to this union.

He received his early education in Charleston, South Carolina.

In 1952 he was drafted in the United States Army and served proudly until he was honorably discharged. After being disabled, he enjoyed being with family telling them stories about his days in the Army.

After his Army tour he enjoyed seeing the country by traveling and living across the United States. His travels lead him from South Carolina to New York then onto New Jersey and ultimately made Chicago his final destination.

Melvin liked sightseeing, talking, walks, watching singing, old movies and sports.

On March 5, 2016 God laid Melvin down gently to rest.

He was preceded in death by his sisters Estell Elmore, Elizabeth Truesdell, Rachel Flood and brothers Clarence Mitchell, Walter Mitchell and Benjamin Mitchell Jr.

His love will live on in the hearts of his sisters Beatrice Trotter, Cealie Griffin, Viola White, Mimie Lee White and brother Earnest Mitchell. Many generations of nieces, nephews and treasured friends will keep him near to their hearts.
