Merle Weldon "Big M" Shoesmith, 90, passed away peacefully in his sleep at Westview Manor Nursing Home in McGregor, TX on Saturday, June 24th at 11:00 pm. A Grandson who bears two thirds of Merles name, Marshall Weldon Shoesmith, was present when his "PaPa Shoe" passed away.

Merle was born to Vinton O. Shoesmith and Maude Mary (Martin) Shoesmith in Guthrie Center, Iowa on January 10, 1927. He was a WWII Veteran and after an Honorable Discharge in 1946, started his career as a mechanic for Gordan Rountree Dealership in Waco, TX. While stationed at Ft. Hood, TX he met and married Mildred Eldora Schange on March 21, 1946. His career included car salesman for Steakley Bros. Chevrolet, insurance sales with American National Ins. Co., and then used car dealerships with partners and finally on his own - Shoesmith & Sons Auto Sales at 2121 Franklin Ave in Waco. A career change came in 1983 when he went into law enforcement as a deputy sheriff at the urging of good friend, Jack Harwell, who later became McLennan County Sheriff. Merle retired in 1996 to his beloved 5M Ranch at Valley Mills, where he continued to be "a human deer feeder" and professional piddler.

Merle was accepted into the Masonic Lodge and became a Karem Shriner. He was a Charter Member of the Texas T's that formed in 1978 and performed in numerous parades in their little cars. For over 50 years he was active in the Masonic Lodge, Karem Shriners and American Legion. He was also a Deacon at the Canaan Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, who resides in Waco at Brookdale Lake Brazos. He is also survived by his three sons, Michael (Ruby) of Morrilton, AR., Mark (Tracy) of Valley Mills, and Matt (Jamie) of McGregor. Other survivors include six grandchildren; Bryan, Michelle, Eric, Taylor, Railey, Marshall, and six great-grandchildren.

He will be available viewing at Cole Funeral Home, 1113 West Fifth Street in McGregor on Wednesday, June 28 from 8:00 - 8:00pm.

Services will be Thursday, June 29 at 11:00am at Canaan Baptist Church, 177 Coryell City Road, Crawford, TX. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Canaan Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Canaan Baptist Cemetery Fund, for perpetual care.
