Merlin Elvin Hays, 73 passed away Friday, March 22, 2013 in his residence. He did not "struggle". He was born, March 15, 1940 in Oregon, IL, the son of Ralph E. and Lucille E. Thomas Hays. Merlin attended Hononegah High School and was a 1958 graduate of Albany High School. He served in the United States Army in Germany for 2 years. He married Beverly A. (Rahn) Watson on January 1, 1969.

Merlin was employed by Commonwealth Edison (ComEd) for 36 years. He was a Post Commander for the Genoa American Legion Post 337 and actively involved with the Blackhawk Area Council of Boy Scouts of America Troop 530 and Pack 355 for many years. Merlin was an avid North Boone H.S. girls basketball fan, he enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and Illini athletics. He was extremely proud of his children and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. When he was with his family he would grin from ear to ear and shed tears of joy.

Survivors include his four children, Janet Elliott of Winneconne, WI, Christian (Heather) Hays of Mission Viejo, CA, Julie (Eric) Johnson of Aliso Viejo, CA, Curtis (Stefanie) Hays, Birmingham, MI; grandchildren, Hannah (21) and Haley (18) Strege, Wilson(18), Jewel (15), Dane (3) and Colt (1) Hays, Jadyn (6), Cammie (4), Claire (1), Bren (8mo) Johnson, Brooke (4) and Kendyl (1) Hays; sisters and brothers, Veda May Cole of Rochelle, IL, Wilmer (Carol) Hays of Libertyville, IL, Doris (Howard) Miller of Mendota, IL, and Laverne (Sandra) Hays of Orfordville, WI; God-daughter, Kathy (Mark) Smith; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother, Eugene Hays and his twin sister, Merilyn Hoffman.

A Remembrance Celebration will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, March 29, 2013, at the Genoa Veterans Home, 311 S. Washington Street, Genoa, IL 60135. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in Merlin's name to any Blackhawk Bank location for a North Boone Girls H.S. Basketball Scholarship Fund.

The twins are finally together again. Rest in peace Merlin and Merilyn.
