Merlin Ray Wiebers of Winston Salem, NC passed away peacefully at Brookridge Retirement Community on Wednesday, December 13, 2017. He was 89 years old.

Merlin was born August 15, 1928 in Arcadia, Iowa, oldest child to Raymond and Christine (Tena) Pauline Brandt Wiebers.

He was an auto mechanic for Peters Bros. in Arcadia, Iowa then Hannasch Motors in Carroll, Iowa. He was inducted on December 7, 1950 into the US Army doing his basic training at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. He served at Fort Sill, Oklahoma and Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas as a Radar/Radio Mechanic. He was discharged from the Army in 1952. Following his service he worked for HF Schroeders a grading contractor and for Fat Kasperson, a local farmer in Arcadia, Iowa.

Merlin attended DeVry University in Chicago. His main employment was with Western Electric/AT&T of Winston-Salem, NC. With Western Electric he spent 2 years in Norway, Sweden and Denmark on undersea surveillance projects. He also was in Bell Tabs, New York and Milwaukee, Wisconsin on the Nike Hercules surface-to-air missile projects. He was on projects at Guam and Kwajalein. He retired from Western Electric/AT&T with over 30 years of service.

Merlin married Margaret Wingate Vestal on January 2, 1980. They were married for 26 years before her passing March 3, 2006. He was also predeceased by his parents, sister-in-law Marlene Wiebers and nephew Rick Erps.

Merlin is survived by his sister Wanda Erps and husband Robert (Bob) Erps of Arcadia, Iowa and brother Gordon Wiebers of Denison, Iowa, nine nephews, five nieces and many other loved ones and friends. He touched the lives of many and will live in the hearts of all who knew him.

The family wishes to express their appreciation and thanks to the staff, nurses and caregivers for their love and support over the years at Brookridge Retirement Community.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 11:00 am at Gardens of Memory - 5676 Old Walkertown Rd - Walkertown, NC. Frank Vogler & Sons Funeral Home - 2951 Reynolda Rd - Winston Salem, NC is assisting the family with arrangements.
