Millicent B. Asher

"Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life" Pablo Picasso.

Millicent (Millie) Asher of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away Friday July 21, 2017 at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, Illinois at the age of 90.
Millie had art in her soul from the very beginning. Her family introduced her to collectors and artists, including the notable surrealist, Man Ray. Raised in northern New Jersey, she graduated from Maplewood High School and Skidmore College with an art degree. As a young woman, she worked in New York City in the field of advertising art. She moved with her husband William Robert Asher to South Florida in 1956; it's there where her artistic talents were truly honed, and where she came into her own as an exhibiting printmaker.
Throughout her Florida years, Millie's art was featured in numerous and galleries, and was reviewed by the Miami Herald. Millie enjoyed producing art in her home and in her own studio in Miami Beach.
Millie made significant artistic accomplishments in a variety of media and styles, including drawing, painting, printmaking and etching, mixed media, photography, photo-collage, zentangle, botanical illustration, portraiture, life drawing, watercolors, and acrylics.
Throughout the years, she continued her artistic pursuits. She was also an accomplished tennis and bridge player, and enjoyed regular games of chess with her family.
Millie is survived by her daughter Anne Asher, and son Andrew Asher, daughter-in-law Carol Dyson, and grandsons William and John Asher. She is also survived by her sister Rita Gilman of Northridge, California, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may direct memorial contributions to the charity of their choice, or the Animal Protective League of Sangamon County.
Graveside services will be held at 12 noon Friday July 28, 2017 at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
