Gulf Breeze, FL - Miriam "Mimi" Thomas, 98, passed away on Jan 26, 2018 after a brief hospital stay. Mimi was born in New Orleans to Arthur Johnstone Stumpf and Miriam Edna Longmire Stumpf in 1919, and raised in houses on Constance Street, Fredricks Road, General Pershing, and Broadway. Along with her 3 siblings and family friend, Lloyd Thomas, Miriam graduated from Keene Academy in Keene Texas. Then Mimi traveled to Florida Hospital in Orlando where she became a Registered Nurse in 1941. She returned to New Orleans to work in Pediatrics at Charity Hospital.
Miriam married her lifelong friend, Lloyd Henry Thomas, now a lieutenant in the Navy, of Nursery Avenue, Metairie, in 1943. She would be the first to say how much she enjoyed the travels and adventures of "their 31 year Navy career." Upon retirement, they came home to Metairie in 1972 to help care for Miriam's parents. After their passing, Miriam and Lloyd moved to Pensacola Beach in 1993. They had a wonderful marriage of 59 years before Lloyd passed away in 2003.
Miriam's only surviving sibling is Emily Stumpf Laue, age 96, of Gladstone, OR.
Miriam is survived by her two children and their families: Mimi's son, Lloyd H. Thomas, Jr. (and Billie Swayze Thomas) of Covington, LA and his daughter, Alysia Thomas-Maloney (& Robert S. Maloney, Jr.) and their five children, Taylor, Margaret, London, Jacqueline and Miriam(Mia), all last name Thomas-Maloney of Covington, LA.
and Mimi's daughter, Leslie Miriam Thomas Gordon (and Douglas T. Gordon) of Gulf Breeze, FL and their two children, Thomas Hamilton Gordon and Margaret Miriam Gordon, both of Pensacola, FL.
Miriam was active in the Pensacola Needleworkers Guild and was an avid stitcher until 2017. Miriam was also active in the Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church Senior Ministries.
Interment into the Thomas family tomb was on Monday, Jan 29, 2018 at Metairie Cemetery in New Orleans, LA. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Feb 2, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, 75 Fairpoint Dr, Gulf Breeze, FL 32561. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Senior Ministries of Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church.
Mimi showed us all that one can age gracefully, but still have fun. She had a kind, compassionate and loving spirit, and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her.????
