Myrtle A. Knehans, the daughter of Alma (Fredrick) and Henry Degener, was born June 18, 1925 at Pickerill, Nebraska. She was baptized on July 5, 1925 and confirmed on December 21, 1941. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the Heritage Care Center in Red Cloud at the age of 88 years, 8 months and 18 days. As a young girl, Myrtle moved with her family to the Cowles area where she received her formal education attending the Eckley Consolidated School. During the World War II years she was employed at the Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot. On July 29, 1947 Myrtle was united in marriage with Kurt Knehans. This union was blessed with a son, Lonnie, and a daughter, Connie. Following the death of her parents her thirteen year old brother, Ray, became a part of their family as well. From 1950-1959 they made their home at Guide Rock, then moved to Red Cloud when Kurt was elected Webster County Assessor. Kurt died on June 16, 1974. In 1975, her brother Ray and family were killed in a car accident, so Myrtle lovingly accepted her nephew, Steve, into her home at the age of nine. Myrtle's career was dedicated to serving Webster County. She was the Deputy Assessor from 1960-1978, and was then elected County Assessor and served until her retirement in 1990. In their younger years Myrtle and Kurt enjoyed fishing and camping. She also enjoyed quilting, working in her flower garden, embroidery, crocheting and baking. Her personality was pervaded by an immeasurable desire to serve others and her independent nature. She will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure to know her. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Kurt; sisters: Mable Rose, Berneice Rose, Norma Rose, Grace Rose, Irene Dailey, Dorothy Bower and Goldie Smidt and her brother, Raymond Degener. Left to treasure Myrtle's memories are her sister Alberta Erickson of Red Cloud; children Lonnie and wife Brenda of Red Cloud, daughter Connie Brumbaugh of Red Cloud; nephew Steve Degner, wife Roxanne and children Landon and Riley of Olathe, KS; grandchildren Chris Knehans and wife Amanda of Fredonia, WI; Kati Knehans Farney of Overland Park, KS; Kelsey Knehans and wife Stacie of Sutton; Glen Brumbaugh Kearney, great grandchildren Madylien, Kohlton, Harper, Jillian, and Kayleigh, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, 10:30 a.m., March 10, 2014 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Red Cloud with Rev. Chad Boggs officiating. Interment will be at the Red Cloud Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m. at the Williams Funeral Home and Monday, 8:00 a.m. to service time at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Zion Lutheran Church. Williams Funeral Home 241 West 4th Avenue Red Cloud, Nebraska 68970
