Norwood Earl Thames Sr., lovingly known by friends as "Woody" and "Pop" by family, went to be with the Lord January 9th in San Antonio, Texas.

He was born April 7, 1924, in Manning, South Carolina, to Marion Thomas Thames and Mary Elizabeth Childers Thames of Manning. He graduated from Manning High in 1942 and followed a Navy career to several countries and U.S. States, but settled in Corpus Christi, Texas where he retired from 22 yrs. of military service. He then excelled in a second career as District Manager for Washington National Insurance in San Antonio, Texas. He was awarded certification in Business and District Management and utilized his education and ingenuity to achieve many company awards. With his perseverance and strategic planning, he led his agency district in a quarter of million dollars contribution for the 1980 Washington National Chairman's two million dollar campaign, was a member of the prestigious Washington National President's Club, and National Honor Association which earned him the coveted President's Red Blazer.

He served as an Ordained Deacon for more than 65 years in several churches, for the last 47 years was an active member of University Park Baptist Church, San Antonio, and belonged to the Gideon and Mason organizations. He encouraged many with their walk in Christ. He exemplified the Bible scripture "Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith", Hebrew 12: 1-2. Even in ill health he maintained his commitment to service to his church and had the fortitude to attend church services regularly up to his final days.
His most prized accomplishment was being the patriarch of a large family and he followed the biblical standard to provide for his family. He encouraged family to "keep a smile on your face and have a good attitude."

Norwood Thames is preceded in death by his parents, Marion Thomas Thames and Mary Elizabeth Childers Thames; his brothers Hugh Thomas Thames, Marion Dewey Thames, and Robert Lemuel Thames: a sister, Francis Bell Thames Broadway; all from Manning, and his wife Marie Barchard Thames of San Antonio.
