Otila "Tillie" Garza passed on to the arms of our Blessed Mother and Divine Father on January 25, 2018. Tillie Garza celebrated her 90th Birthday on October 13, 2017, with Mariachis serenading, as she sang along in Houston, Texas where she resided since 2006. Friendly and engaging, Tillie was always smiling, happy and loving to everyone she met. She will be recruited as a greeter in Heaven.

Tillie was dynamic, charismatic and devoted to helping others. Tillie's passion was reading and inspiring children to read, and their parents to read to them. She served as the Librarian of Martin Elementary School in Brownsville. Dressing in a colorful costume as 'Mother Goose', she presented reading programs to the delight of pre-school and elementary school children throughout the Rio Grande Valley.

Tillie became quite well known and publicized for spreading joy and inspiration with generosity and compassion in the Valley. Recognized for her contribution to Brownsville and Cameron County, she was honored by receiving the Key to the City of Brownsville, first female Ambassador of Goodwill for Brownsville, Brownsville's Woman of Distinction. Brownsville Public Library Certificate of Appreciation, Zonta International Women's Club Woman of the Year for Leadership and Dedication to Community.
Tillie served as President of the BISD Retired Teachers Association, President of the Lion's Club of Brownsville and Volunteer and Recruiter to "Help One Person To Succeed" (HOSTS).

With a continuous presence at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brownsville, she served the Catholic Daughters. Significantly, she was on the Grieving Committee, helping families through difficult family situations with home visitations, hospital visitations and arranging funeral for families.

Tillie is survived by her three children Linda (Jerry) Patchen, Vicki Mancuso Michael Wayne Frizzell, her grandchildren, Maya (Eric) Blanton, Michelle (Ryder) Mackey and Justin Patchen and her great-grandchildren, Garrett & Kayla Blanton. She is survived by her brothers Ben (Patty) Garza M.D., Marin (Peggy) Garza M.D. and her sisters-in-law Yolanda Garza and Dora Garza. She is survived by many cousins and nieces and nephews.

With ten brothers and sisters, Tillie is preceded in death by her parents, Leoncio & Nellie Garza; her brothers, Baldemar (Margaret) Garza, Oscar Garza, Omar Garza, M.D., Oswaldo (Ana) Garza, baby Homero Garza, and sisters, Ofelia (Alvaro) Saenz, Ofira (Ernesto) Guerra.

The Family of Tillie Garza expresses tremendous gratitude to Peggy McCall, RN, MSN, Sue McLeod, RN and their dedicated staff at 'Com For Care' for providing compassionate attention and skillful care to all of Tillie's personal and medical needs for many years. Thank you for going the extra mile in a kind, nurturing and happy atmosphere, and most especially thank you for caring.

ROSARY will be on Friday, February 2, 2018, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Brownsville, Texas, at Darling Mouser Funeral Home, 945 Palm Boulevard, (956) 546-7111.
Memorial Mass will be on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. in Edinburg, Texas, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 501 East Kuhn Street, (956) 383-3253. Following the Saturday Mass, a Lunch Reception for Family & Friends at 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 pm, will be at the Echo Hotel, 1903 South Closner Boulevard in Edinburg, Texas, (956) 383-3823.

Private Family Interment will be on a later date at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery with her loving parents.
