Patricia (Patsy) Coffey Walker went to be with Our Lord on Sunday, October 16, 2016. She was born on January 23, 1923, in Austin, Texas to James Ross Coffey and Esther Dierlam Coffey. She was a descendant of early Calhoun County pioneers.
Patsy was a graduate of Austin High School and Southwest Texas State University, now Texas State. She also attended The University of Texas at Austin and Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana. On the first day of School at Centenary, she met the love of her life, Norman Walker of Atlanta, TX. They were married for 65 years before his death in October of 2007.
The Walker family moved to Calhoun County in 1955 when Norman began working at Carbide. In 1957, Patsy began her teaching career at Seadrift Elementary. She transferred to Point Comfort School in 1961 where she finished her career. As a home economics major, she had to complete several more years of school to become certified in elementary education.
Patsy remained active in Retired Teachers and Delta Kappa Gamma until recently. She enjoyed bridge, canasta, and loved playing the Mexican Train Game with her grandchildren. She and Norman also enjoyed traveling around the country with their RV groups. Patsy, was a faithful member of First Baptist Church for more than 56 years, and enjoyed their Jolly Elders group.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Norman and her devoted sister, Azile Coffey Bonneau.
She is survived by her children, daughter, Patricia Walker Burgoyne and husband Art of Diamondhead, MS, son, Mike Walker of Port Lavaca and former daughter-in-law, Rhea Helmreich of Boonville, MO. Grandsons include CSM Cliffe Burgoyne and wife Kate of Ft. Campbell, KY, James Burgoyne and wife Anjele of Slidell, LA, Lt. Colonel Jeffrey T. Burgoyne, currently serving in Saudi Arabia and wife Shanna of Hattiesburg, MS, Michael Walker and wife Cassandra of South Padre Island, TX, and SSG(P) James Edward Walker of Ft. Richardson, AK. Granddaughters are Rhea Anne Walker Vickery and husband Bobbie of Port Lavaca, Doctors Sarah Elizabeth Walker and husband Joe of Buffalo, NY, and Patricia Louise Walker, ESQ. and fiancé' Jonathan Sayegh, ESQ of Boston, MA. who are to be married on Saturday, October 22nd on South Padre Island. She is survived by eleven great-grandchildren, Hayley and Blayne Vickery of Port Lavaca, Trey and Chandler Burgoyne of Ft. Campbell, KY, Avery Rose and Sarah James Burgoyne of Slidell, LA, Tayler Root of Tuscaloosa, AL, JT Burgoyne Jr of Hattiesburg, MS and Kellen, Colt and Vivienne Rose Walker of South Padre Island, TX. She is also survived by 9 nieces and 4 nephews, several Coffey and Dierlam cousins, including Esther Dierlam Swinford of Seadrift and Yuba City, CA.
Patsy has passed on a legacy of true Southern Charm. Her recipes for delicious food (especially desserts) will always be a staple on the tables of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Always, perfectly poised and dressed complete with hair and make-up she was the epitome of a true "Southern Belle" and will forever remain in our hearts.
Visitation will be from 7-9 pm Wednesday, October 19 at Richardson Colonial Funeral Home and from 12:30 until service time at the First Baptist Church on Thursday, October 20, 2016. The funeral service will begin at 1:30 pm with burial following at Greenlawn Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 902 Calhoun St. Port Lavaca, TX, Delta Kappa Gamma, Epsilon Pi Chapter, Honorary Teachers Society, Calhoun County Senior Citizens Association or any other charity of your choice.
