Patricia Leonard Van Mater, born November 19, 1923, passed away peacefully on 9/9/2017 at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, George C. Van Mater (1996). Pat was a 49 year resident of Wardour where she lived with fierce independence into her 90's. Her independence, willingness to speak her mind, quirky humor and warm heart were her defining features. She gathered people into her circle of love and they became family. She loved the outdoors and she and George spent the summers of their retirement years camping and hiking in the mountains of New Hampshire. She was an advocate for all animals and was particularly devoted to her dogs. Music was a sustaining force in her life and she passed that gift on to her daughter, Helen. She was deeply involved in her church, First Presbyterian Church, Annapolis, where she sang in the choir for many years and played handbells with the Tintinabulators. These activities brought her both deep joy and deep and lasting friendships. She is survived by her son, George R. Van Mater and daughter in law, Madeline Meharg of Annapolis, and her daughter, Helen M. Van Mater of Seattle. Her "circle of love" family includes Tom Reed of Quakertown, PA, Lou Fifer of Sacramento, CA and his daughters, Molly, Megan and Amy and their families.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday Oct. 19 at 2 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 171 Duke of Gloucester St. Annapolis. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the victims, both human and animal, of the recent hurricanes.,,,
