Paul Joseph Ketola, 73, of Princeton, died Monday morning, December 15, 2014 at UP Health System Marquette's Hospice Unit, surrounded by family and under the care of UP Home Health & Hospice. He was born February 21, 1941, at the family home in Princeton, a son of the late Onni and Senja (Maki) Ketola and was a lifelong area resident. On November 10, 1968 he married the former Karen J. Wery in Carney, MI. Paul worked in construction for many years with a number of UP contractors and was a member of the Michigan Laborer's Union Local #1329. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, an avid Green Bay Packer fan and enjoyed hunting, but was happiest working on his land at Cataract, which has been in his family for 100 years. His camp was built with logs harvested from that property. Also, one of his favorite pastimes was winning big at the casino. Paul will be remembered as a hard worker who believed a man was only as good as his word. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and was known for his quick sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Karen J. Ketola of Princeton; children, Greg (Avis) Ketola of Gwinn and Jennifer (Steven) Haldane of Anchorage, AK; grandchildren, Marah & Chase Grinnell of Anchorage, AK, Brett Ketola, Kenny Ketola, Sydney St. Clair and Senya Ketola, all of Gwinn; siblings, Elaine Ellman, Lois (Jack) Thurston, Sheila (John) Rastello, Mavis (Bob) Jancsi and Ruthie (Jay) Crist, all of Gwinn; and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Gerald, Richard & Kenny Ketola; two sisters, Nancy Paris & Shirley Willig; and a niece, Linda Ketola. A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 22, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Rell Spickerman officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service in the church. Interment will be in the Gwinn Cemetery in the spring.
