Philomena “Phillis” Sherlock Mitchell was born in Yale, Oklahoma on September 29, 1934 and went to be with the Lord on November 17, 2017. She grew up in Oklahoma and graduated from Mount St. Mary’s Catholic High School and Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University). She worked as a secretary at Humble Oil for a short time after graduation before marrying Jack Barry in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1957. The couple lived in Tripoli, Libya for two years and then moved back to Tulsa before being transferred to Houston in 1962. Phillis and Jack had two children, Mark and Diane, prior to Jack’s death in 1966. Phillis remarried in 1967 to Ed Mitchell whom she remained married to until his death in February of this year. Ed had four children when they married, David, Edwina, Rene, and Kathy, and she felt blessed to have a blended family. Phillis stayed home with her children while they were young, but later returned to work outside the home as a secretary, later in relocation, and finally in an insurance office. She received her real estate and broker licenses and had her own relocation business with partners for a while.

Traveling, music, movies, plays, art, jewelry, and books were some of the many things Phillis enjoyed. Appreciating listening to live music, she also played trumpet in school and was involved in choirs for many years in school and in churches. She also always had to have a book and enjoyed reading since she was a child. In addition, she really loved people, all people, and wanted to hear their stories no matter what pain or situation she may be in at the moment. She would sometimes joke about her “gift of gab”, but her family and friends knew her as a great listener. Never taking herself too seriously, she had a good sense of humor and loved to laugh.

Phillis was a Christian and loved her Lord Jesus Christ. Worship music, Bible studies, and prayer were so important to her. She was a member of Kingsland Baptist Church and loved the people there dearly. She forged deep friendships with those in her Sunday school class, her prayer partners, those in her Bible studies, and those in the book club. Having people come to her home for prayer, Bible studies, and book club brought her great joy and those were cherished memories that she had until the end. Also, spending time with her family was so important to her and she really loved and was loved by them. She will be missed, but her love of the Lord and others will leave her lasting legacy of the importance of family, friends, church, faith and having a spiritual relationship with Jesus Christ.

Phillis is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Linda Barry, and daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Harley Boyle. She is also survived by her step-son, David Mitchell; step-daughter and son-in-law, Edwina and Will Litchfield; step-daughter, Rene’ Mitchell; and step-daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Dan Ives. Additionally, she is survived by granddaughter, Sarah Boyle; grandson, Micah Boyle; step- grandson and wife, Steven and Rhiannon Mitchell; step-grandson, Charlie Mitchell; step-granddaughter and husband, Lindsey and Tommy Gregory; and step-grandson, Matthew Stockdale. She is further survived by her step-great-granddaughter, Kira Mitchell; and step-great-grandson, Teagan Gregory. Phillis had four sisters and was the last living of her siblings, but she is survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.

A memorial service will be held at Kingsland Baptist Church, 20555 Kingsland Blvd., Katy, Texas 77450 at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 2, 2017. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to student missions at Kingsland Baptist Church.
