Phyllis J. Kastning, 89, of Capron and formerly of Marengo, died peacefully Saturday, May 10, 2014 at St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.
She was born January 17, 1925 in Union, the daughter of Paul and Eleanora (Buhrow) Bauman. Phyllis graduated from Marengo High School in 1942, and then went to work at the Watch Factory in Elgin, and later at Arnolds and Marengo State Bank, Marengo. On October 18, 1947 she married Norman Kastning at Zion Lutheran Church in Marengo. She and Norman worked by the month as "a married man on a farm" in Woodstock. On March 1, 1950 they rented an 80 acre farm near Marengo and started their dream of dairy farming. On March 1, 1956 Phyllis and Norman purchased their first dairy farm in Union. Then in 1976 they moved to a farm near Capron. She helped with the field work on the farm until the age of 80.
She was a member of Zion Ladies Aid, Boone County HCE Capronites, and Silver Streaks. She also enjoyed her Wednesday Breakfast Group at The Steam Plant in Belvidere. Phyllis will be especially remembered for her quick wit and famous reply "Fit as a Fiddle." She also truly enjoyed her four grandchildren and her great-granddaughter, by whom she will be greatly missed.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Charles (Brenda) Kastning, grandchildren, Scott (April) Kastning, Cindy Kastning, Brian (Fiancee Julia Smith) and Mary Kastning, and great-granddaughter, Gracie Kastning.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Norman in 1989, her brother Harold "Butch" and his wife, Virginia "Ginnie" Bauman, and brother, Erhart "Bud" Bauman.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8pm on Wednesday, May 14 at Zion Lutheran Church, 408 Jackson St., Marengo. Visitation will continue from 10am to 11am on Thursday, May 15 at the church. The service will be at 11am.
Interment will be in Marengo City Cemetery.
