Phyllis S. Lesczynski

Formerly of Whiting, Indiana and Calumet City, Illinois

Devoted mother and caregiver

Phyllis Susan Lesczynski, 75, died Friday, June, 12, 2015 at Palos Community Hospital. Phyllis was the youngest of seven children born to George and Maria Buros of Whiting, Indiana.

Phyllis was a woman beyond her time, achieving both a Bachelor's degree in Science and Nursing from Loyola University, Chicago, and a Master's degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. Phyllis was also a certified nurse midwife delivering over 2,500 babies during her tenure at Cook County Hospital. She was proud to finish her career as a school nurse at ECHO Joint Agreement in South Holland, lovingly caring for children with severe special needs. Phyllis was known for her never ending kindness and compassion. She was an avid cross word enthusiast, a great lover of classical music, Russian literature and museums and was a wonderful liberal thinker.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Helen Lesczynski and Ben (Jessa) Lesczynski her sister(s) Mary Brazina, Helen (Jim) Maginot and Marge Ratkay, and many beloved nieces and nephews including her goddaughters, who had a special place in her heart, Marybeth Papierz and Julianne Donahue. She is preceded in death by her dear husband Norbert.

Services will be held at Hennessey - Nowak Funeral Home, 400 Pulaski Rd., Calumet City, Illinois 60409 on June 21, 2015 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
