Richard Bolling Powell, Sr. went home to his savior Jesus Christ at the age of 91 from Jacksonville, Florida (2 Corinthians 5:8). A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Richard was born in the Powell Family Home in Gallman, Mississippi. Richard, who grew up in Jackson, Mississippi, attended Central High School and played quarterback on the football team. He left Mississippi College after the bombing of Pearl Harbor to join the U.S. Army Air Corps. After serving with the 8th Air Force during World War II in England and France, he returned to continue his education and work as manager of a branch bank for Deposit Guaranty National Bank in Jackson, MS until his retirement at age 62. In Jackson, he served as a Deacon at Fondren Presbyterian Church and loved to share the "Bible in a nutshell", John 3:16 and his favorite scripture passage Psalm 103. He helped coach his son's little league baseball and YMCA basketball teams. With his wife and two children, he enjoyed hiking in the mountains, pitching baseball, fishing, canoeing, raft trips, cookouts, and attending piano recitals and ballet performances. His wife Julia Bedinger Powell passed in March of 1998. His children include Nancy (Steve) Powell Scoper, and Richard (Donna) Powell Jr. Grandchildren include Lauren (Brandon) Powell Hays, Elizabeth Scoper, and Julia Scoper. He was considered by many to be a true southern gentleman. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Presbyterian Home for Children, 80 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
