Richard was born on Halloween in 1941 in Oakland to Attilio and Olga Calegari. As a child, he was a boy scout, alter boy at St. Columba, and loved to play sports especially football and track. He graduated from Albany High School in 1959. Right after his graduation, he joined the Navy and served for two years. Following the Navy, he worked at Oakland Scavenger Co with his father. He joined the Oakland Fire Department in 1964 and eventually became a captain. Richard married Jo Ann Belvedere on January 30th 1966 and was married for 51 wonderful years. They had two sons, John and Tony. Richard had many accomplishments throughout his life, but none as important as his wonderful, loving family. Richard was also inducted into the Albany High School Hall of Fame for football and track. Additionally, during his 23 year career as a firefighter, he won the bronze medal in the Police and Fire Olympics in the 100 yard dash. Richard loved to be outdoors, explore new places, cooking and enjoyed fine dining.

Richard is survived by his loving wife, Jo Ann; his devoted sons John and Tony, his daughter-in-laws Lisajoy and Staci, grandchildren, Julianna, Nicolas, Chase, Clayton, Alivia, and Christian. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters Diane (Don), Barbara (John), David (Gail) and Bobby (Diane).
