Richard Williams of Novato, 88, suddenly passed away on 26 February of heart failure. He is survived by Norma S. Williams, to whom he had been married since 1957. Also surviving are their three children, Susan Byers (Roger) of Beaverton, Oregon, Richard Williams (Ellen) of San Luis Obispo and Sara Ethier of San Francisco, six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1928, he spent his entire youth in the family home in Madison, N.J. He attended local schools in Madison and later Rutgers University where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and assorted campus organizations.

He entered active army service following the outbreak of the Korean War and served as an officer of the Armored Cavalry. He began an insurance career in New York City that would last 40 years, take him to field assignments in Denver, Colorado and Dallas, Texas, culminating in Novato where he retired as a Sr. Vice President of Fireman's Fund Insurance Company. It was in Dallas that he met and married his wife Norma. Their three children were born there.

During his business career he served on numerous local insurance committees and on the Board of Directors of Surety Association of America, New York. In private life he was associated with a variety of community organizations in support of his children's activities.

A consummate student of history, he traced his family's roots to the Pilgrims of the Mayflower and to qualification for membership in The General Society of Mayflower Descendants. He was a member of New Jersey Society Sons of the American Revolution.
