After a brief illness, William Robert Caveness Sr. passed away Saturday in Baptist East Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. The youngest of five children, he was born on January 23, 1935, to Eddie Walker Caveness Sr. and Ruby Lee Womack. A 1952 graduate of Marietta High School, Robert attended Northeast Mississippi Junior College where he played basketball for 1 year. He then transferred to Mississippi State University in the spring semester of his sophomore year and graduated from MSU in 1956 with a degree in agronomy. That same year he entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged in1957 as a private 2nd class MPC. His love for the land led him to begin working with his father, Eddie Walker, on the family farm. During this time, he was named Outstanding Young Farmer of Prentiss County and was appointed by Governor William Winter to the Yellow Creek Port Authority Board. After a successful career in farming, Robert joined his brother, Eddie, in the sawmill and furniture building business until he retired in 1993. In retirement, Robert kept himself busy with his garden, grandchildren, and the Mississippi State Bulldogs. In 1996, he and his family traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana, and Lexngton, Kentucky, to see the Bulldogs advance to the Final Four. He was a member of the Roaring Hollow Hunting Club and spent many days with his grandsons and granddaughter hunting. Robert started Pappy's Produce for his grandchildren where they sold peas, butterbeans, corn, and tomatoes at the Tupelo Farmers' Market. As his grandchildren got older, their interests turned to sports, and Robert was at every sporting activity in which they competed. When his great-granddaughter came along, he was there watching her play too. After his family, his greatest love was New Site Royals basketball. He had never missed watching a grandchild play high school basketball until this past Thursday. He truly enjoyed watching the basketball go through the hoops. The day after a basketball game, Robert would join his Marietta Mini Mart Morning Coffee Friends and discuss the game from the night before and have the world's problems solved by the time they finished their coffee.

A Celebration of Life service will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, December 11, 2017, at McMillan Funeral Home with Minister Tony Brown officiating. Burial will be in Zion Rest Cemetery.
