La Canada , CA – Robert Charles Wagner, 86, a former resident of Medford, MA died peacefully after a two year battle with lung cancer. He was the beloved husband of Nancy Slye Wagner. Born the youngest of 11 children in Medford, Bob was the son of Canadian immigrants, the late James and Margaret Wagner of Nova Scotia. At 18 years old, he left high school and joined the Air Force. He was sent to Ladd Air Force Base in Fairbanks, Alaska. While serving there he completed his high school degree through long distance learning. After being honorably discharged in 1952 he enrolled in Boston University. There he met Nancy Slye a senior at BU. Bob started working for The New England Life Insurance Company in the evenings after his studies. Married on Dec. 19, 1953, their first son Jeff was born in Jan. of 1955. Bob graduated college in 2 years and 10 months in July of 1955. Employed full time with The New England, Bob worked for the company for 38 years. His work would take him to San Francisco where he and Nancy had two more children, Karen and Chris, St. Louis where they had Marlene, Overland Park, Kansas, and finally La Canada, CA where Bob ran the Los Angeles area office for The New England. Bob was active in the community, a charter member of the Pop Warner Football Club where he served as the athletic director, a board member at the Youth House, president of the La Canada Chamber of Commerce, and active in the local Toastmasters Club. He is survived by his three sisters, Eva (102), Clara (98) and Dottie (92) who reside in Massachusetts, several nieces and nephews; his son Jeff who lives locally; son Chris and his wife Mary and children Alex, Kathryn and Tara; daughter Karen and her husband Gary and children Brendan and Garrett, and daughter Marlene and her husband John and children Kyle and Kaley. Bob and Nancy have been married just shy of 63 years . Bob will be interred at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the La Canada Congregational Church on Saturday Jan. 14th at 2:00 p.m. presided over by his son-in-law Rev. John Pomeroy.
