DUKE, Robert Cabell Robert Cabell Duke, 75, of Fort Lauderdale, FL, passed away at Holy Cross Hospital on Saturday, (April 29, 2006) after a massive stroke. Born on July 30, 1930 in Petersburg, VA, Mr. Duke was the son of the late Harriet Woodford Duke and the late Walter Cabell Duke. At age seven, after having lost his father to tetanus the year before, Robert moved with his family from Virginia to Connecticut, where he attended public schools in Bloomfield, graduating from Bloomfield High School in 1948. From 1952 to late 1953, he was in active military service in the U.S. Army, for which he earned an Occupation Medal (Germany) and a National Defense Service Medal. His military service continued in the U.S. Army Reserve until his honorable discharge in 1960. At age 24, Robert undertook employment at the Hartford Courant newspaper in Connecticut, where he worked for 32 years, retiring in 1986. Several years later, he moved to Fort Lauderdale, FL, where he became part of a community of friends whose companionship, loyalty, and kindness brought him great joy. Robert will be remembered for his passion for cruise ship travel, his avid interest in sports, and his love of reading. He is survived by two sisters, Almeda Duke Tabatsky of Latham, NY, and Barbara Duke Smith of Manchester; as well as several nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins. A graveside service, with Military Honors, will be held on Friday, May 19, 1 p.m., at Latimer Hill Cemetery in Bloomfield. Carmon Windsor Funeral Home has care of the arrangements.
