Major Robert F. Zikowitz (U. S. Army, Ret.), formerly of Annandale, VA, passed away peacefully at his home in Greenspring Village, Springfield, VA on December 16, 2017 at the age of 96.

Beloved husband of 65 years to the late Emily Zikowitz (nee Hart); dear father of Robert (Brenda) Zikowitz, Jr., Michael (Laurie) Zikowitz, and Patricia Berry; grandfather of Burgandy (Jamie) Trimmer, Aleisha (Andrew) Mattice, Hillary Zikowitz, Alex Zikowitz, Lauren Zikowitz, Timothy (Tiffany) Baird, and Lindsey (Kyle) Hayne, as well as the great-grandfather of 9. He is also survived by one brother, Richard (Iolanda) Zikowitz

Robert was born in Schenectady, New York in 1921 and raised in Philadelphia, PA. After two years of college, he joined the United States Army. He proudly served our country during WWII and was selected to be part of the newly-formed Vint Hill Farms Station cryptology and intelligence school, later to become a very integral part of WWII as a top secret military code breaker. It was because of the work of the Second Signal Battalion, in conjunction with the British cryptology network, that the D-Day invasion was a success. He was a true American hero and was honored as such in 2015, after his missions' work was declassified. While in the Army, he also served in China, Korea, Japan and Ethiopia, and various bases in the United States.

Robert was a devoted member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church in Annandale since 1959. A dynamic member of the Greenspring community for many years, he was one of a few members who had volunteered over 4000 hours bettering the lives of his fellow residents.

A service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, January 13 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Annandale, VA, with a reception to follow in the Parish Hall.

In addition, there will be a service on Friday, January 12 at 1:00 p.m. in the Greenspring Retirement Community Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Robert's memory to:
