Robert “Bob” James Datema passed away peacefully at University of Kansas Hospital surrounded by loved ones on November 13, 2017. God looked down on Bob and told him your suffering and in pain, so he took him home. Bob was born on September 26, 1930 in Sibley, Iowa to John and Bertha Datema. He graduated from high school in Omaha, Nebraska and attended The University of Nebraska where he graduated with a degree in Accounting. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps Air Wing from 1951-1953. He worked at Union Pacific Railroad Headquarters in Omaha for over 10 years and retired in 1993 from Lake City Army Ammunition Plant after 27 years of service. It was there that Bob met his future wife, Joyce K. Hess. They were married on September 2, 1967 and celebrated their 50th anniversary this year with a large party of family and friends. God blessed him with good health for this wonderful celebration. Bob loved spending time at their home at Lake of the Ozarks boating and water skiing. Bob and Joyce spent many years square dancing and served as Treasurer, Vice President and President of the Heart of America Federation of Square Dance Clubs. Bob also served as Treasurer of the Independence Garden Club for six years. Bob is preceded in death by his mother and step father, Bertha and Jack Kennedy, his brother Richard Kennedy, mother-in-law Doris Hess Denning, brother-in-law Jerry Hess and his loving companion Shalimar, a feisty little schnauzer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years Joyce K. Hess Datema, sisters-in-law Mary Ellen Rethford and Dorothy Hess, 7 nieces and nephews, and 16 great nieces and nephews. Services will be held at the Floral Hills Funeral Home in Kansas City, MO on Saturday, November 18. Visitation and viewing at 1pm and funeral service at 2pm.
