Robert James Hardy, retired Auburn ophthalmologist, passed away peacefully at his
Lincoln Hills home on Tuesday November 28, 2017. He braved ALS with presence,
grace and courage. Bob was 75 years old and deeply loved by his family and friends.
Born on May 20, 1942 in Chester SC, Bob had a diverse and exciting growing up,
living with his family in many different states around the country for his childhood
and teenage years. He attended Punahou High School in Honolulu, HI for his senior
year and then Stanford University from 1960 - 1964. At Stanford he met his wife KJ,
began his study of medicine and cultivated his love of college football. He graduated
with honors from UC Irvine Medical School in 1968. He was in the US Army from
1970 - 1977, a Lieutenant Colonel, and completed his Ophthalmology Residency at
Letterman Army Medical Center in San Francisco. Moving to Auburn in 1977, he
found the perfect hometown to raise his family and begin his private medical
practice. He was a devoted family man, a trusted friend and a dedicated physician
who cared deeply for his patients.
Bob was a true Stanford football fan and watching a game was one of his great
pleasures. This year was his 50th year of season tickets! His other great loves in life
were being out in nature, studying the cosmos and stargazing, traveling,
Shakespeare and music, chess and games, sharing stories over good food and wine,
and above all else, spending time with his family and friends. He taught us to savor
life, to appreciate the simple pleasures, and the fine art of teasing the ones you love.
Son of James and Marie Hardy, Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years
Katherine Jane Hardy; his three daughters Jennifer (Luis) Kuri, Lesa (David) Hardy-
Bergeaud and Susanne (Michael) Guilbert; his four grandchildren Nicole Marie,
Mateo Luis, Lucas James and Lila Jane; his sister Margaret Gillet; his niece Marianne
Carliez, his nephew Marc Gillet; and his companion Tonae Hasik, her daughter Lara
(Nick) Saich and her grandson Barrett.
Bob, Dad, Baba, Dr. Hardy, Mr. Bob is cherished by his family. He was a truly fine
man and will be remembered for his thoughtfulness, his sense of humor and his
great love of life. He will be so very missed but never forgotten.
