Retired pastor Robert J. "Bob" Gillispie, age 92 of Chatmoss Court Martinsville, VA, while surrounded by his family, claimed the promise of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and entered heavens gates on September 5, 2017. Born in the Coleman Falls area of Bedford County Virginia on October 3, 1924, Bob was the son of the late Robert J. Gillispie and Florence McGann Gillispie.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Virginia Hamilton Gillispie, one brother and six sisters. He leaves to cherish his memories his sons; Ronald Gillispie and wife Gail of Lynchburg, Robert E. Gillispie and wife Judy of Rustburg and Mark S. Gillispie of Martinsville (Mark was his fathers devoted care giver during his time of illness). In addition Bob is survived by 6 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren as well as other family members. Bob preached the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the pastor of Hill Memorial Baptist Church for over 3o years, retiring at the age of 76. He attended Fruitland Baptist College earning his ministerial degree and relocated to Martinsville from Lynchburg in 1973.
As a young man Bob fought in World War II as a member of the famed 82nd Airborne Division. He completed his 13th jump on D-Day June 6, 1944 in Normandy, France. He became a prisoner of war by the Germans and eventually escaped 10 months after being captured. He returned to America several months later where he received an honorable discharge from the Army.
Visitation will be held Friday, September 8, 2017 at Hill Memorial Baptist Church from 11:00am - 1:00pm with a going home service to follow at 1:00pm. The service will conclude at Roselawn Cemetery in Martinsville with full military honors.
