Arrangements Robert Rey Tavernia died at his home on February 19 surrounded by his family. Robert was born on April 20, 1928 to George and Emma (Rey) Tavernia in Elko, Nevada. He served in the Navy from 1946 to 1947.After his discharge from the Navy he moved to Oregon.
He married Jessie Ream on November 15, 1953. They lived their entire married life in Prineville.
Robert was a surveyor with the US Forest Service before his retirement in 1983.
Robert had many interests in life. He was passionate about fossil hunting. He spent many days at the John Day fossil beds tromping through the hills. He loved sports at Crook County High School. He carried chains for the high school football team for over 25 years. He also loved track and field at the University of Oregon. He was a season ticket holder for 30 years.
Robert and Jessie enjoyed traveling, especially after his retirement. They took a trip of a lifetime to Egypt. They also traveled to Holy Lands, where they shook hands with the Pope. They also traveled to Mexico, Canada, and extensively in the western United States.
He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and doing crossword puzzles.
Robert is survived by daughters Mary Wickersham of Jefferson, OR, Jean (Dale) Krehbiel of Seattle, WA, and Joan Tavernia of Prineville, OR. Son Tom (Bonnie) Tavernia of Prineville, OR. Brother George (Ruth) Tavernia and sister Marilyn Galli. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by Jessie, his wife of 60 years, his parents, and his son, Robert Rey Tavernia, Jr.
A visitation will be held at Prineville Funeral Home on Thursday, February 27th from 4-6PM, a rosary will follow at 6PM. A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Friday, February 28th at 12:30PM. Interment will follow at Juniper Haven Cemetery.
