Rodney Saylor Johnson, a Powell Butte resident passed away on Friday, August 5, 2011. He was 90 years old.

A celebration of his life will be held at 1:00 p.m., on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Powell Butte Community Hall. Tom Alexander of Powell Butte will officiate.

Rodney was born in Gladstone, Oregon on November 30, 1920 to Roy A. & Hazel (Saylor) Johnson. He grew up & was educated in Portland, Oregon and graduating from Washington High School. He attended Oregon State College where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He graduated from the University of Oregon in 1947 with a degree in Journalism.
During WWII Rodney served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He married Betty Lucienne Crain at Luke field in Arizona on May 21, 1943.

Rodney worked for several newspapers on the coast, before moving to Central Oregon. He came to Powell Butte in 1950 and has lived on the same ranch since 1964.

Rodney enjoyed golfing, rock-hounding and raising sheep. He started the Central Oregon Rancher magazine in 1953. Rodney also started a tradition in Central Oregon to photograph the Grand and Reserve Grand Champions in the livestock classes at the local county fairs.

Rodney is survived by his daughters; Janet Christine Burrows of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Maradee & her husband Bob Stearns of Meridian, Idaho, son; Scott Crain & his wife Kathy Johnson of Powell Butte, Oregon, sister; Joyce & her husband Jim Ward of Lake Oswego, Oregon, five grand children, and 21 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Betty on Jan 11, 1990 in Powell Butte.

Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to the Central Oregon Rancher 4-H & FFA Scholarship fund at any South Valley Bank & Trust branch.
