Niantic- Mrs. Rose L. (Guarino) DeMarco, 93, of Niantic, died Friday, September 16, 2016 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospitals after being stricken at home.
Mrs. DeMarco was born on March 8, 1923 in Newark, NJ the only daughter of Giovanni and Rosina (Stefanelli) Guarino. The daughter of immigrants from Italy, she had to learn English and then teach her parents to speak English and she became fluent in both languages. She helped both of them to become citizens of which they were very proud.

She married James DeMarco, from New London on September 7, 1947 in Newark. They met at a USO dance while he was stationed at Fort Dix having just returned from Korea.

Having summered in Niantic for years to visit with her cousins, her father built a house for his daughter and her family when he retired and they all moved to Niantic in 1966.

A graduate of Central High School in Newark, Rose excelled in stenography and especially typing. She was thrilled to have been selected and awarded a special award for Art at her graduation. Her first job was for Dipple Shade Company in Newark. She went on to also work for many years at the ABC (Alcohol Beverage Control) of NJ., She was very active in the PTA at First Avenue School in Newark. She was a Girl Scout Leader both in Newark and Niantic for many years where she planned camping trips and field trips to Museums, West Point and Rockefeller Center. She was very honored to be a graduate of OIC in New London in 1980 and went on to work there as a secretary.

Mrs. DeMarco is survived by her daughter Rose Virginia DeMarco and partner, David Prebenna of Brookfield, CT; her son James DeMarco Jr., and his wife Jackie of Waterford; her grandchildren Michael DeMarco and wife Allison, John DeMarco, Kristin Langston and Alison Rose DeMarco; her brother-in-law Angelo J. DeMarco and wife Gloria of Cranston, RI. Her husband and his oldest brother, Alexander R. DeMarco, of New London, predeceased her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016 at 11am at St Agnes Church, 22 Haigh St., Niantic. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, New London. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 5 until 8pm at the Fulton-Theroux Funeral home, 13 Lake Ave., Niantic.
