Roy Leston Stamper, 96, passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount. Born on April 8, 1921 in Comers Rock, Virginia, Roy was the son of the late Lee Peyton Stamper and Dollie Cornett Stamper. As a young boy, he walked two miles from the family farm to the one room Bethel School, and then graduated from Elk Creek High School. During World War II, Roy served as a Naval Air Cadet.

Roy met and married Frieda Virginia Harrington in 1948 and together they raised three children, Deborah, Greg, and Peyton. While raising their family, they were active members of Forest Hills Baptist Church and Roy also served as a volunteer with the Raleigh Rescue Mission. Subsequently, they joined Ephesus Baptist Church where Roy served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon.

During his working years, Roy returned to Elk Creek High School to teach agriculture, and managed Southern States stores in Tennessee and Virginia before pursuing a career in real estate appraisal. He retired in 1989 from the N.C. Dept. of Transportation - Appraisal Division as Deputy Director.

A brilliant man and accomplished craftsman, Roy designed the plans for the home he and Frieda built in Roanoke, VA. He enjoyed many hours spent helping his children build and restore their homes as well. His own home was graced with items gleaned from years of antiquing which led to selling antiques from their own booth in a Raleigh antiques mall.

Roy enjoyed many years vacationing at Holden Beach, and touring the U.S. and Canada with Frieda in their motor home. He was always ready to enjoy a game of any sort - Yahtzee, UNO, carrom, ping pong or pool - his eyes would twinkle as he beat you! At the end of a day, Roy could be found relaxing in his favorite chair, watching a Western or reading his well worn Bible.

He is survived by his wife: Frieda Harrington Stamper; children: Deborah Thomassen and husband Thom, of Janesville, WI, Gregory Allen Stamper of Garner and Peyton Harrington Stamper and wife Bonnie, of Spring Hope; grandchildren: Matthew Scott Thomassen and Gregory Austin Stamper and wife Sayaka; numerous nieces and nephews and other family and friends. Roy was preceded in death by his siblings: Lorene, Wayne, Fred, Leo, and Ralph.

A Luncheon and Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 22, 2017 from 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm at Mitchell Funeral Home (7209 Glenwood Avenue), with Funeral Services, officiated by Pastor Greg Templin, to begin at 2:00 pm in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Samaritan's Purse - PO Box 3000 - Boone, NC 28607 or at www.samaritanspurse.org.
